Ms. Debbie Gardiner has returned to Columbia Elementary School to serve as the Special Education Teacher for Grades 6-8. For the past couple years she served at Sonora Elementary School in a special education administrative position and was here before that for 11 years serving students Kindergarten through Fifth Grade.
“Columbia EL has always had a special place in my heart and I am excited to return back to work with my colleagues and friends and some of my previous students,” smiled Ms. Gardiner. “Both of my children went to Columbia Elementary since Kindergarten and I am excited to be back with my daughter in her last year there.”
While eager and up to the challenge in her first year teaching middle school, Ms. Gardiner noted how there are many new teachers, paraprofessional, and administration since she was last at Columbia. She saw other changes as well such as smartboard in the classroom, new classroom location, new curriculum adoptions, an expansion of middle school electives, enrichment classes, and global education.
“I am excited to reconnect with my previous colleagues and teach many of the students that I had in the past,” she said. “I am looking forward to being part of the amazing team at Columbia Elementary again.”
Ms. Gardiner was motivated to become an educator because she wanted to make a difference in children’s lives and has a passion for teaching and love of learning. Her goal is to create a “well-rounded, effective, and supportive educational experience for all learners” through a student centered approach and having an inclusive environment for all students.
“I want a special education program that not only meets the basic needs of students with disabilities, but also empowers them to thrive academically, socially and personally,” Ms. Gardiner explained.
She hopes to continue making lasting connections in the classroom, is excited to see what her “aha” moments will be, and wants to watch her students grow into “wonderful people.”
In her spare time, Ms. Gardiner spends time with her family and friends, likes to travel, be active and outdoors (especially skiing and wakeboarding), and watches her children play sports.
